Akhenaten
Akhenaten, King of Egypt, 2021, Acrylic Paint on 24x48” board, framed
This past Spring I took a course on the Amarna Letters and became fascinated with Akhenaten, an Egyptian king from the 14th century BC who corresponded with kings and rulers across the Ancient Near East via letters written in cuneiform script. Although he is not Mesopotamian, I became interested in him because of the connection with the Akkadian language. In ancient iconography, Akhenaten is often portrayed in soft, gender ambiguous ways, which is part of his intrigue. To play off this, I have painted him here in a combination of our stereotypically gendered pinks and blues. I painted this based off a statue of Akhenaten housed in the Cairo Museum in Egypt.
If you like this painting, but don’t have room for large scale art, check out my “minis” section where I have 4”x8” prints available.
** If you are visiting in early 2022, I am working on photographing and updating my website. This is a large framed painting and I will have a better photo that includes the frame posted within the next month or two.
